Mayo has one word to describe Patriots QB Drake Maye

When it comes to describing rookie quarterback Drake Maye, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said there is one word that best sums him up after everything he has seen from his young quarterback.

“He was stable. I think if I had to say one word, it would be stable.” Mayo said on Tuesday. “He’s always in the building, always learning. He’s out here trying to get better every day. And he’s going to take more reps this week if that’s the question. If that’s the underlying question, he’s going to take more reps this week, believe me.”

Maye again had some positive moments on Tuesday, including an incredible throw to fellow rookie Ja’Lynn Polk during the 1-on-1 portion of their joint session against the Eagles.

On the pass, Maye threw the ball perfectly to the left sideline and dropped it right in front of Polk, who caught it for a possible touchdown.

This was arguably one of Maye’s best throws to date, although he struggled during the team period due to a lack of protection – especially on the home stretch.

But one thing cannot be denied: his demeanor. The rookie often remains quite composed even when things are not going his way. These were traits that were widely discussed before the club even signed him, and they continue to serve him well in this first month of training camp.

Mayo said Tuesday he expects the rookie to get more time when both Philadelphia and New England take the field Thursday night at Gillette Stadium, and he praises Maye for always taking every opportunity to improve. Mayo cited Maye doing just that last Thursday against Carolina when, despite only playing one series, Maye spent the rest of the game trying to capitalize on every rep from a mental standpoint for the rest of the game.

“I would also say when he wasn’t in the game, he was still listening to the calls and mentally preparing, which is very important,” Mayo said. “I always tell all the players, ‘When you’re not in the game, you should be mentally active and going over the checks in your head.’ He definitely did that.”

After Tuesday’s practice, Maye told reporters he took away “a lot of learning moments” from the team’s joint session against Philadelphia. We’ll see how that plays out when we hopefully see a little more of him on Thursday night.
