According to a new study, Burgas, Bulgaria is the cheapest European destination for a 5-star holiday suitable for a family vacation.
In the Burgas region, with its long coastline and historic sites, the average price for a package holiday was £776.
According to Travel Supermarket’s Cheap Holiday Index Platform (CHIPs), for this price, holidaymakers could enjoy a week-long five-star holiday, including a meal and a day trip to a local attraction for one person.
By comparison, a three-star stay in Larnaca, Cyprus would cost £828. The stay in Bulgaria would also be £1,000 cheaper than a family holiday on the Costa del Sol in Spain.
Egypt ranks second in the index, with a five-star stay here costing an average of £795 per person for a week. A seven-day stay in Malta would cost an average of £818 for that five-star experience – both prices are still below the price of three-star accommodation in Larnaca.
If a trip to Turkey is on your bucket list, a five-star package holiday to Dalaman costs on average just £833 per person, just £5 more than three-star hotels in Larnaca.
In the Algarve in Portugal, costs are £985 per person, while the Costa Dorada in Spain is an affordable option with prices just under £1,000 and £996 per person respectively.
Rounding out the top 10 cheapest 5-star package holidays are four destinations that just break the £1,000 per person barrier: a stay in Crete costs an average of £1,040, Larnaca £1,050, Paphos £1,061 and Lanzarote just makes the list with an average price per person of £1,063.
At the other end of the list is the Costa del Sol, the study’s most expensive five-star package holiday destination, averaging £1,799 per person per week.
Even if someone were to choose a long-haul holiday to a destination outside Europe such as Cancun or the Dominican Republic, such holidays would still be on average over £295 cheaper than on the Costa del Sol.
