New Woodbury County Law Enforcement Center nears “substantial completion”

WOODBURY COUNTY, Iowa (KTIV) – Nearly 11 months after the original “completion date” for the new Woodbury County Police Center, the date is getting closer, according to the agency.

The Woodbury County Law Enforcement Center Authority said Tuesday it is awaiting another report before the new LEC can be considered “substantially complete.”

The hiccups?

The earthquake bracing.

Earlier this summer, the agency said the project’s general contractor, Hausman Construction, failed to install 300 earthquake-resistant supports that are part of the fire suppression system. The supports have since been installed and tested. The agency is now awaiting the official test report.

This is the main problem, according to the authority, the new LEC cannot be considered “substantially complete”.

“Hausmann informed us that we should receive the seismic report today or tomorrow,” said Shane Albrecht, the property representative for the LEC Authority. “As of noon today (Tuesday), we did not have the report, but if we receive it today or tomorrow and nothing unexpected happens, the certificate of substantial completion will be issued this week.”

Once the report is received and no further problems are found, the project will be “substantially complete” and the keys to the new Woodbury County Law Enforcement Center will be turned over to the Sheriff’s Office.

“Once the chief gets the keys, he has already determined through Captain Harlow that there will be enough personnel on site 24/7 to maintain security in the secured portion of the building,” said Woodbury County Sheriff Chad Sheehan. “So when that transition happens, things are going to move really quickly for us.”

According to the authority, there are still numerous other issues that need to be addressed. However, this does not prevent the project from being declared “substantially complete”.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Wednesday, September 18, was also set as the official date for an open house to give taxpayers the opportunity to see the facility for themselves.

Further details regarding the open day will be announced at a later date.

The official time capsule for the project was also decided on Tuesday. What will be included in it? That will be decided at the next meeting.
