How Drake’s love for the Lone Star State led to his official residence in Texas

drake could have been born and raised in Canada, but his heart led him to officially become a resident of the state of Texas.

On Monday, a photo of the rapper’s ID card with the official Texas logo surfaced online. Naturally, social media users didn’t wait long to voice their opinions on his move. Some people pointed out that Drake’s feud with Kendrick Lamar was the reason for his move, and others joked about how he posed for the photo.

Drake’s move comes as no surprise, especially since he has always been open about his love of the culture and his ties to the state. Plus, he recently purchased a luxury resort in Brenham for $15 million. Read below how Drake has slowly established himself as a Texas resident.

Lyrics and slang

Since Drake transitioned from actor to rapper, he has incorporated Texas into his lyrics in some form. More specifically, Drake has referenced the city of Houston in many of his songs, such as “TSU,” “From Time,” “Houstatlantavegas,” and others. He also sampled Houston’s DJ Screw’s freestyle “June 27th” on his track “November 18th.”

Houston Appreciation Weekend (HAW)

In 2014, Drake created Houston Appreciation Weekend, better known as HAW. The three-day celebration was filled with charity events hosted by the rapper. These events were designed to give back to the community and honor and celebrate the city and its culture. Outside of philanthropic duties, HAW entertained its attendees with a celebrity basketball game, pool parties, daytime parties, concerts, and more.

J. Prince and Rap-A-Lot Records

The record label boss was first introduced to Drake in 2006 after his son Jas Prince brought the two together when he found out the “Degrassi” actor was venturing into music. A year later, Drake signed with Aspire Music Group, owned by Jas and Lil Wayne’s manager, and explains how Drake joined Young Money. Since then, Drake and Prince have maintained a close friendship, with the music manager standing by the rapper’s side at the height of the controversy.

Partnership with brands

In addition to his embrace of the state’s culture, Drake has also collaborated with several Texas-based brands and has been associated with numerous companies. First off, he has been spotted wearing Houston Rockets apparel several times to highlight the city’s basketball team. It is unknown if Drake has an official partnership with the NBA team, but his appearance at the games has helped the Rockets’ marketing. In addition, Drake has supported his friend Bun B after the opening of his restaurant Trill Burgers. His appearance at the establishment has not only inspired people to visit the burger joint, but has also increased his exposure.

Nevertheless, it is clear that Drake loves the state of Texas very much and does not hide it. Cheers to the big step!
