The life of an NFL rookie is never easy. Rookies are constantly competing with experienced veterans for a starting spot, adjusting to the NFL from college and—if they are later drafted or signed as a free agent—just to get a spot in the rankings.
Take former UNC star quarterback Drake Maye, for example. Maye’s life is considerably easier than that of most rookies, as the New England Patriots selected him third in this year’s NFL Draft, but Maye – along with proven veteran Jacoby Brissett – is battling for his first start in professional football.
Although Maye is new to the NFL, he is already developing good chemistry with his teammates, including rookie teammate Javon Baker, the former Alabama and UCF wide receiver.
Maye has had quite the career at North Carolina, being named the 2022 ACC Rookie and Player of the Year, being in the Heisman Trophy conversation every season and — last season — the Tar Heels were ranked No. 10 in the nation at one point.
With Gene Chizik past his prime as defensive coordinator, UNC failed at the end of Mayes’ two seasons as starting quarterback.
Today, Maye’s goal is to help his New England teammates win more championships as a professional football player in arguably the biggest football franchise of the 2000s.
