Oregon police officer receives Ohio Instructor of the Year award

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Law Enforcement Against Drug & Violence announced that Oregon Police Officer Sara Shaw was honored with the Instructor of the Year award.

According to LEAD, Officer Shaw received the award for her outstanding work in communicating the curriculum implemented by LEAD to students during the school day. She has been a LEAD teacher for three years.

“We congratulate Officer Shaw on her outstanding work in helping to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community in Oregon. Her award is well-deserved,” said Nick DeMauro, CEO of LEAD. “Officer Shaw’s commitment to teaching children the importance of drug and violence prevention helps us further achieve our goal of improving police-community relations.”

LEAD is a nonprofit organization that works with communities to educate students about the dangers of drugs and violence.

In Oregon, the LEAD program is taught to 475 fifth- and sixth-grade students in the Oregon City School District. It is also taught to 40 middle school students and 18 high school students at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School.

“We have targeted conversations with the kids about how to communicate with their peers inside and outside the classroom,” Shaw said. “They are also taught how to manage their anger when they have it, and they learn what is and is not appropriate when it comes to alcohol, drugs and violence.”

According to LEAD, Officer Shaw says her favorite part of the 10 weeks in the classroom is watching students participate in activities and encouraging their classmates to get involved as well.

“I’ve noticed that when the kids see me in the hallways, they come up to me and talk to me a lot more than they used to before I started the LEAD program,” Shaw said. “Interacting with the students has helped strengthen the bonds that not only the schoolchildren have with our police department, but also the rest of the community.”
