“Be naughty or Santa might get rough”: Suspended Fairfax County teacher and coach sends sexual messages to minors

A suspended Northern Virginia High School football coach will spend at least one more night in jail in Maryland.

48-year-old David Clay Murray is accused of five counts of sexual assault of a minor in Maryland. Each count is punishable by 25 years in prison or a $10,000 fine.

Court documents accuse Murray of having online conversations with an undercover Frederick County Sheriff’s detective.

According to investigators, the online encounters began on the website FET, which is designed to counsel adults with fetishes, and later moved to Telegram, an instant messaging app.

Those court documents allege that Murray referred to himself as “Santa Claus” and used profanity in his communications with the detective. Murray’s attorney claims he initially asked the other person if she was actually an adult and she said no, assuming he was role-playing.

Maryland prosecutors want to keep Murray in custody without bail until his preliminary hearing on Sept. 12. The judge postponed the bail hearing to give Murray’s family time to develop a plan to put GPS monitoring of their home in place, which Frederick County does not currently have in place.
