Ohio State football coach Ryan Day wins award that, oddly enough, was just created

Ohio State football has had some great rosters over the years. They’ve had the most talented roster in the Big Ten every year for the last decade. They haven’t been able to win big games because of bad coaching, bad play, or some combination of the two.

Ryan Day has been the program’s overseer since 2019. He has coached in a national championship game but hasn’t won a Big Ten championship since 2020. Day is generally considered a good coach, but some Buckeye fans disagree.

CBS Sports seems to like what Day has done in the past and what he’s done this offseason. They like him so much that they gave him an award that they created this offseason that doesn’t really mean much other than that he had a good offseason.

CBS gave Day the Preseason Coach of the Year Award, which they apparently created themselves. What does this award mean? Nothing. Day hasn’t won a game this season. The only thing he’s accomplished is bringing a few players out of the transfer portal and building a nice coaching staff around him.

Don’t get me wrong, both are important. This is the best coaching staff Day has had since he took over as head coach. But they actually need to show they can put it all together on the field. Chip Kelly and Jim Knowles have proven they can do that, but Justin Frye has not.

Do I think Day is the best coach in the country? Of course not. Kirby Smart has outperformed him by a long shot the last few years. Sark has done a great job at Texas. Frankly, Day could be fired after this year if he doesn’t beat Michigan. He’s closer to being in the firing line than being the best coach in the country.

Day is under a lot of pressure and he knows it. He’s accepted it. Let’s see if he can handle it.
