(Pokémon TCG) Poncho-Wearing Pikachu “Rayquaza” (XY-P Promotional Cards 230/XY-P) (Release Date/Price/Where to Buy)

Poncho wearing Pikachu from the Pokémon Trading Card Game

Among the most valuable of all the Generation Six Poncho-Wearing Pikachu promotional cards is the card featuring Pikachu disguised as Rayquaza. This card was originally released in July 2016 as part of the Rayquaza Poncho-Wearing Pikachu special box set and quickly became one of the most sought-after cards of the generation.

About the Poncho-Wearing Pikachu (XY-P Promotional Cards 230/XY-P)

This card has a full art illustration where the holofoil of the card is clearly visible through the glitter effects in the background. The inclusion of yellow circles covering much of the background enhances the visual impact of the card and gives it a touch that is sure to impress long-time Pokémon fans. These yellow circles resemble Rayquaza’s body markings. Add to that the blue background, which likely alludes to the fact that Rayquaza lives in the sky.

The timing of the card’s release was also relevant to its popularity and value. At the time of its release, the most recent Pokémon video games were Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the Gen 6 remakes of the third generation games Ruby and Sapphire. In the post-game storyline, Rayquaza plays a major role; this additional storyline is unique to the remakes—it was not present in Ruby and Sapphire.

The card also hints that it’s not actually Rayquaza, as one of its attacks is printed as “Fly?” with a question mark. Finally, this card is very interesting for completionists who plan to collect the entire set of poncho-wearing Pikachu cards.
