Data from Barb’s latest Establishment Survey found that 68.7% of UK households had access to an SVOD service in the second quarter of 2024, up slightly from 67.9% in the previous quarter.

According to Barb, the number of households with two or more connections also rose for the first time to 14 million (48%).

Netflix was the most popular streaming service in the UK, with 17.1 million households – or 58.6% – accessing it, up from 16.7 million in the previous quarter.

The number of UK households using Netflix’s advertising offering continued to rise, increasing from 2.12 million (7.4%) in the first quarter of the year to 2.78 million households (9.5%).

Amazon Prime Video reached 13.7 million UK households (46.7%) in the second quarter, compared to 13 million (45.3%) in the first quarter.

Disney+ reached 7.6 million households (26.1%) in the UK, roughly the same as in the previous three months, with 820,000 households opting in to the advertising offer.

Apple TV+ had 2.4 million UK households (8.3%), Paramount+ 2.8 million (9.7%), Discovery+ 3.2 million UK households (11.1%) and NOW 1.98 million (6.8%).

Doug Whelpdale, Head of Insight at Barb, said: “More than 20 million UK households have access to an SVOD service for the first time since Barb began collecting data in 2014. This figure is 1.25 million higher than the second quarter of 2023 – an increase of 6.6%.”

“The challenge will be to maintain this momentum. The third quarter of 2024 will be a crucial test to see if pure VOD services can avoid the plateaus of the last three years, but so far 2024 seems to be going well for these services.”
