The new Sonos app is terrible, and that opinion is not controversial. The rushed redesign has received countless bad reviews since its launch in the App Store in May.
Last month, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence apologized for the rocky launch, and now The Verge reports that the company may be close to bringing back the old version of the app.
The Verge writes: “There have been discussions at the highest levels of Sonos about bringing back the previous version of the app, known as S2, while the company continues to work on improving performance and fixing bugs.”
Currently, there is no way to use the older version of the app, as customers in the Sonos ecosystem are locked into the new and confusing interface of the newer version. Although Sonos is working hard to update the new design and continuously improve the app, it is still not as functional as the previous version, which the company has left in the past.
Back from the past
As a Sonos user, I’ve become increasingly frustrated with the new app over the last few months. It looks great (depending on who you ask), but it’s just confusing and hard to navigate. The Sonos Beam in my living room has recently started having trouble pairing with the two Sonos Era 100s I use for my turntable, and doing simple things in the app, like unpairing speakers, is just a lot more cumbersome than ever.
I’m not against using the new Sonos app; the updates have helped, but I would welcome a return to the old version. Sonos learned the hard way: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
