5 things you should know about the investigation into Matthew Perry’s death

Here are five things you should know about the case:

1) A doctor was arrested

According to TMZ, which broke the story citing unnamed law enforcement sources, at least one of the suspects arrested was a doctor.

2) The role of ketamine

Federal authorities at the Los Angeles Police Department were investigating the role of ketamine in Perry’s death and how he obtained enough of it to kill him. The 54-year-old actor was found dead in the hot tub of his Pacific Palisades home on October 28. The cause of death was listed as “the acute effects of ketamine.”

“Contributing factors to Mr. Perry’s death include drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine, which is used to treat opioid addiction. The cause of death was accidental,” the medical examiner said in a statement.

3) The levels made no sense

Ketamine can be used to treat depression, but the medical examiner said Perry’s last treatment 1 1/2 weeks earlier could not explain the level of ketamine found in his blood at the time of his death. The drug is normally broken down within a few hours.

4) There were two doctors who treated Perry

Perry was treated by at least two doctors, a psychiatrist and an anesthesiologist who served as his primary care physician, the medical examiner’s report said. No illegal drugs or paraphernalia were found in his home.

5) Perry had advertised his sobriety

At the time of his death, Perry had celebrated his sobriety and spoken openly about his long-standing struggle with drugs and alcohol. His unsparing memoir about the heights of fame and the depths of addiction included a harrowing account of emergency surgery after a gastrointestinal perforation that nearly cost him his life.

According to the coroner’s report on the actor’s death, there was no evidence of illegal drug use in Perry’s system at the time of his death.
