Drake has long been an ambassador for the Toronto Raptors, and it’s only fitting that he wants to lead a new WNBA team in his hometown.
The superstar rapper made a simple call to action on his Instagram page on Wednesday, sending the WNBA a message: “I need a Toronto team.”
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert recently stated in an interview with ESPN that the league is aiming for massive expansion over the next five years.
“We’re doing all this data mining right now,” Engelbert told ESPN’s Tisha Thompson and Mechelle Voepel. “My guess is that next summer or this time next year, in our 26th season, we’ll be talking about the number of teams and a list of locations.”
Basketball has never been more popular in Canada, and Toronto is one of the largest markets in North America that doesn’t currently have a WNBA team. It’s honestly overdue.
Canadian basketball star Kia Nurse agrees.
This also applies to Nick Nurse, the head coach of the Toronto Raptors.
“I think it would be great. I think Toronto should have a team… We’re in a golden age, given the amount of players and the amount of talent that’s pouring out of here.” – Nick Nurse on Toronto’s WNBA team. “I imagine it would be insanely successful.”
I agree.

In 2019, entrepreneurs Daniel Ascott and Max Abrahams jointly made a bid for a WNBA team in Toronto, and although the bid was obviously unsuccessful, the group is still pushing for a team, mainly through a active Twitter account.
Bringing a team to Toronto will take more than Drake’s influence in the entertainment and basketball worlds, but for a basketball-mad market, adding a WNBA team has always made sense, and now is no better time to do so.
