Patriots’ Drake Maye plans second preseason game

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is expected to get more snaps in the Patriots’ second preseason game than the six he got in his NFL preseason debut. However, it remains uncertain how many snaps the rookie QB will get. Expect him to get at least one or two full drives. However, there are no guarantees.

Jacoby Brissett is expected to start for New England in 2024. However, some Patriots fans have made it clear that they want the rookie as the starter instead. For an organization that once had a star in Tom Brady, the Patriots want their next franchise quarterback. Brissett is a fairly reliable QB, but he is already 31 years old and is not considered a star in the NFL.

Again, Maye received only six snaps in his preseason debut. New Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo discussed the team’s QB plan after the game.

“We obviously wanted to see Jacoby go out there and perform as well as Drake did and mix them up with the best,” Mayo said after the game, via ABC6 News Desk’s Nick Coit. “The other guys, like Zappe and Joe, went out there and finished the game. I thought they did a good job. But that was kind of the thought process. Next week we have the Eagles. So we’ll practice against them and, who knows, the reps will probably change a little bit and we’ll see what happens in the game. But that was the thought process.”

Is Drake Maye the Patriots’ quarterback of the future?

New England is in a tough spot right now. They probably don’t have enough all-around talent and depth to compete for a Super Bowl. The Patriots are moving forward and seem to see Maye as the quarterback of the future.

That doesn’t mean he’ll start right away in 2024, though. The Patriots will go slow while Maye develops. If Brissett struggles, Maye could get his chance sometime in 2024.
