India’s cheapest 4×4 SUV launched! » MotorOctane

Maruti Jimny is now around Rs 400,000 cheaper than Mahindra Thar! But how? Jimny, the powerful 4×4 SUV with real off-road gear, is expected to continue the legacy of the Maruti Gypsy. It also offers more second-row space than its main rival, the Mahindra Thar. However, Jimny has not been able to match the Thar in terms of sales. To counteract this, Maruti has reduced the prices of the base model of Jimny by introducing a new Thunder Edition. So, let’s take a look at the new prices of the Jimny and what the Thunder Edition has to offer.

Jimny Thunder Edition

So let’s first talk about the new prices as this is a big move by Maruti. Previously, the Jimny was priced between Rs 14.91 lakh and Rs 17.58 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Now Maruti has slashed the price of the base variant by a whopping Rs 2 lakh! This makes the Jimny more affordable at Rs 12.91 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). For a fair comparison, the hardtop 4×4 Mahindra Thar LX (MT) is priced at Rs 17.66 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). This makes the equally capable Jimny Rs 4 lakh cheaper than the Thar! Also note that the new prices are for a limited period only, so such a steep discount is a clear sign of how desperate Maruti is to sell the Jimny.

With a heavy discount, Maruti has also introduced the new Thunder Edition. The Thunder Edition will be available on all variants of the Jimny. The Thunder Edition is likely to be available with black body paint that features mountain graphics, which makes the Thunder Edition stand out. Also, Maruti is offering a Thunder package that adds a number of accessories at an additional cost. Full details of the additional accessories are available in the images below –

Apart from the revised prices and the new Thunder Edition, the Maruti Jimny remains mechanically unchanged. It continues to have the same 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 103 bhp and 135 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Prices

As mentioned earlier, the Maruti Jimny now starts at Rs 12.91 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) and goes up to Rs 17.58 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). With the new affordable variant, Maruti will be watching the market and see how it competes with the Mahindra Thar.
