Woman recalls escape after murder-suicide that killed 6-year-old girl and girl’s mother

A woman is recovering at home after being shot twice in the neck in a murder-suicide that left a six-year-old girl and her mother and father dead last weekend.

Makyah Page’s actions likely saved the life of her own five-year-old daughter when the shooting occurred at her home on Weavers Circle on Sunday.

“I don’t want anyone else to go through this or see this,” Page said.

The shooting on Sunday left gunman Daquan Jones, his girlfriend Kiera Massenburg and their six-year-old daughter Zoey Jones dead.

According to Page, it was an argument between Jones and Massenburg that caused him to freak out. She said Jones shot his daughter first before shooting Massenburg.

“Out of the blue, he shot Zoey,” Page said.

Another friend from the gathering, Devote Ricks, was also shot. Ricks is responsive and in stable condition.

“He was able to shoot Ricks, and then he came at me, and I just remember going and trying to run, and I still got shot,” Page said.

“I can’t get the image of their eyes out of my head,” Page said of Massenburg and Zoey Jones.

The day before the shooting, authorities released Daquan Jones from the Edgecombe County Jail on assault charges, court records show.

Page said Zoey Jones did not want to leave the meeting from Saturday night until Sunday morning.

“She screamed at the top of her lungs, ‘I don’t want to go!'” Page said.

Zoey Jones wanted to stay with her friend Bella, Page’s five-year-old daughter. But Daquan Jones told his daughter no, Page said.

Page said the family was trying to get into the car when Daquan Jones shot the girl and then her mother.

“They were in the driver’s seat when he shot her,” Page said. “She was holding (Zoey) on her lap.”

Daquan Jones shot Page next. She ran into her house to get to safety while he ran after her. Page’s daughter Bella then ran to a neighbor’s house to escape the gunfire.

“He came in there and put the gun to my head and I begged him and begged him,” Page said.

Daquan Jones got into the car and had to move the injured Massenburg and Zoey Jones out of the way so he could continue driving. He ended up at a home in Nash County, where he turned the gun on himself, police said.

Family, friends and community members will hold a balloon release for Massenburg and Zoey Jones on Thursday, August 22nd at 6 p.m. at Moe & D’s Restaurant Grill & Bar in Rocky Mount.
