Main street in downtown Fort Wayne will be closed

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – Fort Wayne city officials have announced that portions of Main Street in downtown Fort Wayne will be temporarily closed.

From August 15th to 16th and again from August 19th to 23rd, Main Street will be closed to traffic between Ewing Street and Maiden Lane. This is the section in front of The Pearl and The Community Center.

Officials said the closure is intended to allow construction crews to remove concrete barriers and complete restoration of the area.

Main Street was closed at times during construction on The Pearl. Kimberly Hardcastle, manager of Eye Specs on Main, says the constant sudden closures were difficult to manage.

“It’s been very difficult because we’re right on the main road. Our patients have trouble getting to their appointments and finding parking,” Hardcastle said. “When they come downtown, they don’t realize the main road is going to be closed.”

When asked if her company is notified of upcoming closures, Hardcastle said, “Most of the time we are not informed when something is closing. We only notice when the trucks come out and put up the barricades.”

For others, it’s a sign of progress, especially for pedestrians like Kevin Dixie. He says, “A lot of sidewalks still need to be repaired, but they’re fixing those by closing some streets. I think that’s a good sign, a positive sign.”

This time, the closure dates are August 15 and 16. The corresponding section of Main Street will reopen on the 17 and 18 and will then be closed again between August 19 and 23.
