Central Texas Restaurant Report Card: 08/15/24

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Here’s this week’s restaurant report card for Central Texas:

The rustic grill at 816 North Valley Mills Drive in Waco failed the renewal inspection with 74 points. (26 minus points)

There were a number of problems. The report was 4 pages long.

The food safety officer found that, among other things, bacon wrapped foods, beef brisket, chicken thighs, vegetables, chicken slices, cream cheese and shrimp were not stored at the correct temperature.

Two coolers could not maintain a safe temperature.

Employees did not wash their hands often enough and a black substance formed on the ice machine.

Rosita’s Taqueria Restaurant at 301B La Salle Avenue in Waco, the renewal inspection failed with a score of 78. (22 minus points)

According to the Food Safety Officer, some of the containers that had been cleaned and disinfected contained old food residues.

Foods such as sour cream, potatoes and fajitas were not stored at the correct temperature.

There were flying insects.

Among other things, the door of the walk-in freezer was missing and the fuse kept blowing.

Salty Dog Bar and Grill In 2004, North Valley Mills Drive in Waco failed a renewal inspection with a score of 89. (11 demerit points)

According to the food safety officer, the deflectors of both ice cream machines were contaminated with a pink and black speckled substance.

At the beginning of the inspection, no certified food manager was present.

There was not a single bucket of disinfectant in the entire kitchen and there were old, crusted food remains on the appliances.

Re-inspection was required at all of these locations.

And this week’s Clean Plate Award goes to New Michoacan at 1205 North 25th Street in Waco.

This place is a dream if you need to curb your sweet tooth.

There are popsicles, snow cones, ice cream – and mangonadas.

You can achieve virtually any flavor and add fresh fruit.

And if you like something different…I think I saw nachos on the menu.

The Report Card sections are drawn directly from public records of regular inspections conducted by health department officials in Central Texas. KWTX does not specify which locations are inspected and does not assign overall scores, which are expressed as percentages. Any questions regarding the status of an inspection, re-inspection, or the reported score should be directed to the individual health departments in the counties where these businesses are located.
