Will Howard named starting quarterback of Ohio State Buckeyes after preseason position battle

Ohio State Buckeyes football coach Ryan Day named Will Howard the team’s starting quarterback on Thursday.

Will Howard will make his debut on August 31 at Ohio Stadium against the Akron Zips.

Howard joined the Buckeyes after three years at Kansas State. He helped the Wildcats win the 2022 Big 12 championship with an upset victory over TCU.

Day said in a press conference that Howard has performed better than fellow quarterbacks Devin Brown and Julian Sayin in over a dozen training sessions.

“Will has really taken control of the offense. I think you feel him in the huddle. You feel his experience. I think he’s done a really good job, as we’ve discussed, of changing his body over the course of the season. So he’s become a threat with both his legs and his arm,” Day said.

Day said Howard doesn’t have to play exceptionally well because the Buckeyes have a good defense.

“We have a good defense this year, so we don’t need anything exceptional. I said this last year at this time, we need someone to take care of the football, make good decisions and run the routine plays routinely,” Day said.

Day said Brown will be the second quarterback behind Howard.
