“Wrote it after doing a full two-hour show”

Young Guru has lifted the curtain on the “crazy” story behind Jay-Z’s appearance on Drake’s “Talk Up.”

In the mix of Drizzy’s 100 gigabyte content drop was a video of him and longtime producer Noah “40” Shebib talking about how the Brooklyn rap legend finished his verse for the song. Everyone was on a tight schedule while the 6 God finished his. Scorpio album and Hov was in the middle of the On The Run II tour with his wife Beyoncé.

In the clip, Drake says he’ll be prepared for Jay to contact him and ask his opinion on the verse once he submits it. According to Drake, he’s going to lay down; that way, he’ll be there once the verse is submitted.

“I’m just laying there for like two hours while Hov does his show because I don’t want him to hit me and say, ‘Hey, what do you think about this?’ and I’m not there to respond,” Drake said in the video. “He’s on stage now. In two hours it’s going to be four o’clock. He’s going to get off stage, shower, probably have a drink and then get back together with Guru to write and (record). So that process is going to take two hours.”

Young Guru chimed in in the comments section of veteran rap journalist Elliott Wilson’s repost of the video, offering further insight into that hectic time and how he and Hov managed to get the verse finished in time. According to Guru, Jay told him to set up a studio in the venue where On The Run II was taking place, and the sound engineer had no choice but to get to work.

“We go out and do a two-hour show,” Guru wrote. “While he has to memorize every verse from every album. No backing tracks. I’m a DJ and I can’t miss a cue or (music director Omar Edwards) would kill me. We finish the show. We go back in the room to finish the verse, but the problem is I have an after-party.”

Guru continued: “I can’t remember which city or country in Europe, but understand, my parties were planned months before the tour. The promoter waited in the parking lot for two hours and I can’t tell him why I’m late.”

Things got even more chaotic when Guru claimed LiveNation’s internet connection was down and he had to think quickly to finish the verse.

“When HOV was finished, the internet we had set up by Livenation was gone. Everyone was gone,” said Guru. “I had to tether my phone to my computer to send the session to @ovo40. I made it to the club just in time for my set.”

Guru finally ended his story by asking if people understood what goes on behind the scenes when making a record and claimed that he had “killed” his DJ set that night.
