Gaylord Hospital receives an outpatient surgery center

GAYLORD – The Munson Healthcare Board of Directors has approved the development of two outpatient surgery centers in Cadillac and Gaylord.

Both outpatient surgery centers will be operated as joint ventures with local surgeons, similar to the Copper Ridge Surgery Center in Traverse City. The new surgery centers will provide a lower-cost option for many surgeries and complement the surgical services currently offered at Cadillac and Otsego Memorial hospitals.

“We recognized a need for ambulatory surgical centers and determined that Cadillac and Gaylord, due to their proximity to our regional hospitals, were the optimal geographic locations to increase access to high-quality, cost-effective regional healthcare services,” said Laura Glenn, chief operating officer at Munson Healthcare, in a statement. “We are excited to offer a partnership opportunity with local surgeons and bring residents advanced surgical services closer to where they live.”

ASCs (ambulatory surgery centers), also called outpatient surgery centers, offer patients the opportunity to safely receive surgery and treatment outside of the usual hospital setting when needed. By adding two new ASCs to its network, Munson Healthcare hopes to free up surgical capacity in its hospitals for procedures that require overnight stays.

The Gaylord ASC will be located at 825 N. Center Ave. and on-site activities will begin this fall.
