67-year-old man builds his own electric car at home

A 67-year-old man from India has built his own electric car – and it is incredibly cheap to maintain.

It took several years before the fuchsia-colored Mini engine was roadworthy.

But once the eye-catching electric vehicle was ready for use, the journey on the roads went smoothly.

The man got all the parts for his self-built electric vehicle himself

We’re always impressed by the imagination and creativity of some car lovers – like the man who made his own wooden Apple Car for his son, or this Porsche Taycan built with a 3D pen, and not to forget the man who turned a Learjet into a sedan.

And in the Indian district of Kerala, Antony John wanted to replace his electric scooter with an electric car – but when he couldn’t find one in his price range, he decided to get creative.

John, who works as a career counselor, contacted a nearby garage and provided them with a design for the car’s bodywork that they were able to implement.

John then set about researching and sourcing batteries, a motor and wiring, which he then installed entirely by himself.

John, who appears in a video shared on the YouTube channel Village Vartha, started his project back in 2018 but had to put it on hold a few years later with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

When the world emerged from lockdown a few months later, John returned to his electric vehicle and obtained a higher capacity battery than the one he originally intended to use.

With the new, more powerful battery, John’s car was ready to hit the road.

The maximum speed is 25 km/h (15 mph) and hence no number plates are required under the Indian Road Traffic Act.

The whole thing cost him around 450,000 rupees, which is equivalent to $5,360 – a bargain.

Not only was it cheap to make, but it was also incredibly cheap to run: John says he spends about 5 rupees – about 6 cents – on his daily 60 km (37 mile) commute.

Although the car looks tiny, it is actually a four-seater – although you would probably have trouble getting an adult human into the back seats.

All in all, great work, John – we are impressed!
