New Illinois law changes JULIE notification time

A loss prevention manager at JULIE, Incorporated says a new law in the state of Illinois changes the reporting deadlines for excavation projects.

Roger Watwood tells Brownfield…

“This will come into effect from January 1, 2025.” He says: “The day you call JULIE doesn’t count at all. Then you have two full days, working days, before the ticket would be valid.”

He says that anyone conducting any kind of excavation project needs to contact JULIE.

“If you ever plan to do any kind of excavation, that is, if you have a shovel in your hand and want to penetrate the surface of the earth, no matter how deep, as required by Illinois law, call JULIE,” he says.

Watwood says this call starts the process of utilities locating and marking underground assets and ultimately helps prevent costly damage.

“If you don’t have a locator for your work, say replacing a fence post, and you damage the line, you are 100% responsible for the repair.” He says, “So the cheapest insurance we have is probably that free call.”

He recommends calling 811 or visiting juliebeforeyoudig.com before beginning any excavation projects in Illinois.
