Many students don’t have a car and may need an additional mode of transportation to get to school. The Regional Transportation District, also known as RTD, offers a solution with its Zero Fare for Youth program, which allows teens to ride for free.

Any teenager can use this service for free without any restrictions. The student must meet certain criteria, such as being 19 years old or younger and presenting their government-issued ID or student card. This allows students to travel on trains and buses for free at any time.

The Zero Fare for Youth program takes students to and from any location in Denver and the surrounding area. There are a few apps you should download to make your commute easier.

Plan your day and commute with the MyRide app. Sign up for service alerts to be notified of delays and outages. Also download the Transit Watch app. If you notice anything suspicious or feel unsafe, contact the Transit Command Center. Staff can see exactly what’s happening using live devices.

RTD tells CBS that it is important to Colorado to offer these services to youth free of charge.

“It’s really a benefit for parents and youth because they no longer have to worry about paying for fares,” said Tara Broghammer, senior specialist of public relations at RTD. “It’s a cost savings for them. It gives them more flexibility and freedom to travel to and from school and attend after-school events.”

RTD tells CBS Colorado there will be some service changes on September 29. CBS Colorado will provide updates as soon as we know more.
