PJ Jacobsen topped MotoAmerica Supersport Qualifying One (Q1) on Friday afternoon at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. Riding his Dunlop-shod Rahal Ducati Moto w/XPEL Panigale V2, the veteran lapped the 2.4-mile track in 1:27.427, not only good enough to lead the 39-rider field, but also set a new lap record, eclipsing the 1:28.028 set by Cameron Beaubier in 2013 on an AMA Daytona SportBike-spec Yamaha YZF-R6.

Mathew Scholtz, the current championship leader, was a close second with a time of 1:27.590 on his Strack Racing Yamaha.

Jake Lewis was third fastest with a time of 1:27.885 on his Altus Motorsports Suzuki GSX-R750.

N2 Racing/BobbleHeadMoto Yamaha rider Blake Davis finished fourth, just behind Lewis with a time of 1:27.905.

EasyHealthPlans.com/TopPro Racing Suzuki’s Maxi Gerardo completed the top five riders with a time of 1:27.999 in Q1.

FRIDAY, 16 AUGUST 2024 | TRAINING & QUALIFICATION 1

LEXINGTON, Ohio (8/16/2024) – The forecast rain over the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course failed to materialize, allowing the trio of Rahal Ducati Moto riders to complete both practice and Qualifying 1 in dry conditions. Jacobsen alternated with Mathew Scholtz at the top of the table throughout qualifying, ultimately finishing the day on provisional pole.

Kayla Yaakov continues to improve with each session and finished the first qualifying session just outside the top five. As she stands now, Yaakov will start her first race at Mid-Ohio on the second row.

The No. 23 Ducati of Corey Alexander experienced mechanical issues during practice, resulting in minimal track time. Although the Roller Die + Forming crew struggled to diagnose the problem before Qualifying 1, they were unable to fix it during practice, resulting in them not being able to complete a lap. Alexander and his crew will have to work hard all night to get the No. 23 Ducati ready to race for Qualifying 2 tomorrow.

The 13-turn track will host second qualifying tomorrow morning at 9:40 a.m. ET, followed by the first Supersport race in over 10 years at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Race 1 will be released at 2:10 p.m. ET. The team looks forward to welcoming the “home crowd” to tomorrow’s events.

PJ JACOBSEN

No. 15 XPEL DUCATI PANIGALE V2

Practice: P5 (1:29.318)

QUALIFYING1: P1 (1:27.427)

WHAT HE SAYS: “We are on provisional pole at the moment, which is great. I think we have a strong package at the moment, but we will be working all night to find a few more areas that we can improve for tomorrow’s qualifying. I am happy with our lap time and pace. We will continue to improve and fight for the win in Race 1 on Saturday.”

KAYLA YAAKOV

No. 19 XPEL DUCATI PANIGALE V2

Practice: P7 (1:29.674)

QUALIFYING1: P6 (1:28.428)

WHAT SHE SAYS: “Today was really good – one of the best Fridays we’ve ever had. I’m really happy with the bike. We made some big changes before the first qualifying session and it was great. The bike handled well and I was able to get behind some riders for the first time this weekend and get a feel for where I’m at. I’m on the second row for now, which is great for me. I’ve got a good feeling for tomorrow morning. Hopefully we can get some speed in some smaller sections and go a little faster. It’s a bummer for Corey, but I know the team will fix the bike for tomorrow and he’ll be up there with the two of us. Overall it was a really good day.”

COREY ALEXANDER

No. 23 CODE 3 ASSOCIATES PANIGALE V2

Practice: P12 (1:30.451)

QUALIFICATION 1: NO TIME RECORDED

WHAT HE SAYS: “Unfortunately we had some technical issues that came over from yesterday. We thought we had resolved them after testing, but they resurfaced this morning and we were unable to fix them before or during qualifying. Hopefully we can get this under control tonight. I’m praying for dry weather in the morning so we can get a good qualifying time for both races this weekend.”

BEN SPIES

TEAM LEADER

WHAT HE SAYS: “We had a great Friday. PJ took the provisional pole and is very happy with the bike. I hope we can do even better for him. Kayla is riding extremely well for her first time here at Mid-Ohio, a very difficult track. Corey had a few issues with the bike. I feel bad for him as we didn’t get to spend much time on the track today, but I think we’ll be able to fix it for tomorrow. He’s fast on this track and likes it a lot, so we’ll try to get the bike running for him and get ready for tomorrow.”
