The Google Pixel 9 series is set to launch next week, and while there are already leaks about its design and specs, it will apparently also come with a newly improved weather app – an app that you can try out right now if you want.
As Android Authority reports, the new and improved Weather app is now available to download from APKMirror. It should work on devices running Android 14 or later, but since this isn’t the final version of the app yet, some bugs and crashes are to be expected – and if it launches properly, it may be exclusive to Pixel phones.
If you’re new to sideloading, it simply means installing apps from outside the Google Play Store. You should always be careful when doing this and only use apps and sources you can trust – and you always do so at your own risk.
To install the app, open the APKMirror link in Chrome on your Android device, go to the download link (ignore the ads saying “Download”), then tap through the security warnings to confirm that you’re OK with sideloading the app. You may also be asked to change Chrome settings to allow installations from unknown sources.
Take the weather with you
So-called AI weather summary strings from the Google Weather app. These seem to be just instructions for the AI they use (Gemini?). As we’ve seen in previous screenshots, the new Weather app manages to pack a lot of information into a simple interface designed following Android’s Material You guidelines. Here you’ll get all the basic information, including temperatures and rainfall amounts, as well as details on wind speed, UV levels, sunrise and sunset times, and visibility.
It also looks like the Weather app will be able to deliver advance forecasts and rain alerts straight to your phone – something that will appeal to those of us who miss the Dark Sky app after Apple acquired it.
As for the future, veteran whistleblowers AssembleDebug and Dylan Roussel have hinted that AI-powered weather reports and detailed weather maps are also on the way. In fact, we’d be surprised if Google launched anything at this point that didn’t include artificial intelligence features.
This new weather app and all four Pixel 9 models are expected to be officially unveiled next Tuesday, August 13. There’s also a good chance that a full version of Android 15 will be announced, and it’s likely that the Google Pixel Watch 3 will be unveiled as well.
