HENDERSON, Alabama (WSFA) – While some teenagers are playing on their phones or video games, there is one student in Henderson, Alabama who enjoys the thrill. For him, free time equals bee time. It all started when Grayson Donofrio was a little boy.
“I’ve been interested in bees since I was eight years old,” said Grayson Donofrio of Wildwoods Honeybee Farms. “My mom just thought we should get out there and do something.”
It’s not a typical hobby for a 15-year-old.
“I think I’m a little different. I just go out with the bees and I’m not really nervous. A lot of young people aren’t really interested in beekeeping. Most people my age are scared of bees.”
He now runs his beekeeping business practically on his own. It just keeps getting bigger.
“I have ten colonies. I really enjoy it. It’s really fun.”
It may look scary to some, but it feels like home.
“It’s hard to explain. But when you open the hive, it’s obvious.”
He has his own business, Wildwoods Honeybee Farms. He removes bees from homes and also makes his own honey. Recently, Grayson decided he wanted to share his work, so he started his own YouTube channel.
“I started building an audience. Then I decided to use this YouTube channel for my bees to show what I do and how I do it. Not only to teach people, but also to show my journey as a beekeeper.”
The journey has only just begun. He already has several thousand subscribers and the enthusiasm is only growing.
