Ross Atkins could save his job with the ultimate free agent Hail Mary

This offseason has the potential to be one of the better offseasons of the 21st century. There will be plenty of talent either looking to be traded or sign new contracts as free agents.

The Chicago White Sox will continue to add to their roster, likely trading Garrett Crochet and Luis Robert Jr., but they won’t be the only ones who could see major roster changes.

The biggest story of the offseason will surely be the Juan Soto sweepstakes, as the 25-year-old superstar will now become an unrestricted free agent. Soto and his agent Scott Boras have turned down several $300 million contracts over the past few seasons to make Soto a free agent.

Now Soto is only a few months away from getting there and no one knows where he could sign.

The favorite for Soto would, of course, be a return to the Bronx alongside Aaron Judge. The New York Yankees could offer him over $600 million if they wanted, and Soto would fit very well alongside Judge for the next decade or however long Judge plays.

In addition to the Yankees, the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers are also potential suitors due to their high willingness to spend and their will to win.

But MLB insider Jon Heyman has another idea that doesn’t sound too far-fetched. Heyman recently listed his preferred Soto arrival locations, and the Toronto Blue Jays came in fifth on that list.

“They tried to get Soto in a trade and owe the fans,” noted Heyman, who gave them about a 25-1 chance of getting him.

Ross Atkins will likely prioritize a contract extension for Vladdy Guerrero Jr. and maybe even Bo Bichette before he really considers offering Soto the ten-year deal he’s looking for. But if everything goes well for Atkins, why not give Soto a try?

Atkins has the ability to spend the money, and if he really wants to win, this deal would lay the foundation for the next decade. Blue Jays fans would feel like they were in a dream if their front office managed to extend Vladdy’s contract and sign Juan Soto in the same offseason. That’s the winning mentality fans want to see.
