Airport awards million roof repair contract to Core Tech | News

The Guam International Airport Authority Board of Directors approved a $20.06 million contract with Core Tech International for Phase 1 of a terminal building roof replacement and renewable energy system at a meeting Friday.

A total of 26 companies have shown interest in the project, but only three offers have been received, said GIAA consultant Frank Santos.

The bids of the other two bidders, Green Committee Development and Pacific Federal Management, were lower, said GIAA CEO John Quinata, “but they did not meet the requirements.”

“Both had problems with their license,” Santos said.

The contract was reviewed by legal counsel to the GIAA, the Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Santos said.

The FAA is expected to award a $21.4 million grant to fund Phase 1 of the roof repair and solar installation project.

The airport board also approved GIAA’s fiscal year 2025 budget of $56.9 million on Friday.

“It’s virtually a flat budget,” said Ricky Hernandez, GIAA’s deputy executive director. It’s a 0.7 percent increase over the current fiscal year 2024 budget of $56.4 million, he said.

During the budget presentation, Hernandez said passenger boarding has “gradually improved over time.”

Hernandez said they are planning for 1.26 million boardings for the next fiscal year. While that’s still down from the pre-Covid record of 1.87 boardings in 2019, it’s a significant improvement from 2021, at the height of the pandemic, when the airport saw “just over 100,000” boardings, Hernandez said.

Guam Airport Authority officials continue to try to attract more airlines to begin flying to Guam, Hernandez said.

He said they meet with about 15 to 20 airline representatives during “route conferences” and talk to network planners about incentives, discounts and the technical capabilities of Guam’s airport.
