Rookie Drake Maye still in the mix, Pats QB competition ‘not over’ | National

Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye is not out of the QB competition in New England, head coach Jerod Mayo said Friday. “We have three days of training camp left and it’s our job as coaches to evaluate that. The competition is not over,” Mayo said in a video conference. “It’s definitely still a competition.” Veteran Jacoby Brissett was declared the frontrunner at the position by Mayo at the start of training camp. The migrant worker in his second tenure with the Patriots has started 48 games in his career, moving from New England to the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns and Washington Commanders. “They have to show something not only to themselves and their coaches, but to their teammates. So it’s definitely still a competition,” Mayo said. Mayo called Brissett’s interception in the end zone against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night a “bad play,” and referenced previous comments he made about Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 draft, having a chance to get the job. “If Drake beats Jacoby, he’s earned that role … if he’s better than Jacoby, then he’s going to play, he’s going to start,” Mayo said. Brissett, 31, has an 18-30 record as a starter in his NFL career. He started 11 games for the Browns in 2022 while Deshaun Watson served his NFL-imposed suspension. Maye, 21, would need to show more consistency before the Week 1 opener in Cincinnati to overtake Brissett for the top spot. – Field Level Media
