GRAND FORKS – About 30 students participating in this week’s music camp sponsored by the Northern Valley Youth Orchestras will perform a free concert at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, on the grounds of the Grand Forks County Historical Society, 2405 Belmont Rd.
According to Naomi Welsh, executive director of NVYO, the students come from a dozen schools and communities in the area.
Guests are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating for the outdoor concert, which will be the first performance in NYVO’s 14th season.
At NVYO’s Dal Segno music camp, which began on Monday, August 5, the aspiring musicians, who play string, wind, brass and percussion instruments, learned from their coaches who are music teachers in private and public schools.
The performance will feature a varied piece of music that the students have learned throughout the week, including classical music and a selection of light string and orchestral works from the film, folk or symphonic pop repertoire, Welsh said.
This year’s campers range in age from 9 to 17 and attend several schools in Grand Forks as well as in Grafton and Larimore, North Dakota, and East Grand Forks, Fisher, Crookston and Thief River Falls, Minnesota.
In case of rain, the concert will be moved to the Myra Museum building.
Dal Segno Music Camp sponsors include Arioso Music Academy, Bernie’s Restaurant, Popplers Music, Claire Givens Violins, Wakefield Hearing and InPrints Screen Printing.
The camp is supported in part by grants from the Grand Forks Park District Foundation, the City of Grand Forks, the Community Foundation of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and Region, and the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which in turn receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The campers also plan to play briefly at the Farmers Market at Town Square downtown on Saturday, August 8th at 9 a.m.
