Pittsburgh Steelers lose starting center due to serious injury

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly losing a key player, center Nate Herbig, to injury.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Herbig suffered a serious shoulder injury that will keep him out of action for an extended period of time, leaving rookie Zach Frazier in the starting position where he will begin the regular season.

The Steelers selected Frazier in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft with the No. 51 pick out of West Virginia, and he will get a chance to showcase his talent in his first season in the league.

Herbig signed a two-year contract with the Steelers on March 16, 2023, and played in all 17 regular-season games last season, primarily on special teams. He started Week 4 in a 30-6 road loss to the Houston Texans and Week 5 in a 17-10 home win over the Baltimore Ravens, playing 100% of the snaps at guard in both games.

He began his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles, playing three seasons for them from 2019-21. As a rookie, he played in two games in 2019, but dramatically increased his playing time to 15 games in 2020, starting 12 of them. He finished his time with the Eagles with 16 appearances in 2022 and five starts.

Herbig spent the 2022 season with the New York Jets after they claimed him off waivers, and he started all 11 games he played in.

He played in college for Stanford from 2016 to 2018 and was named to the First Team All-Pac 12 as a sophomore in 2017 and the Second Team All-Pac 12 as a sophomore in 2018. He opted out of his final season and was undrafted in 2019.

Herbig is a native of Hawaii and played for Saint Louis School in Honolulu, earning All-State honors as a senior in 2015.
