Key findings

  • According to rumors, Nintendo Switch 2 will cost $499.99, a significant price jump over previous models.
  • The market launch is planned for 2025, which puts it in line with other gaming handhelds in terms of price.
  • Despite the price increase, exclusive games and backwards compatibility could continue to make the Switch 2 a popular choice.

We know a Nintendo Switch 2 is coming out – the questions are when it will come out, what hardware it will have, and how much it will cost. We’ve seen leaks and rumors about the Nintendo Switch 2 in the past, but only now have we heard of a possible price. And if the rumor is true, Switch fans are looking at a pretty big price jump.

Nintendo Switch good-8

As reported by Notebook checkThis rumor was brought to us by Hideki Yasuda, a Japanese analyst. Yasuda has bad news for anyone hoping that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be cheaper than the average handheld game console:

Reporting on Nintendo’s latest financial results, Yasuda cites sources suggesting that the Nintendo Switch 2 will launch in early 2025 with an MSRP of “$499 or less.”

If true, that puts the Nintendo Switch 2 at $150 more than the Switch OLED model. More importantly, that price increase would put the Switch 2 in a similar price range to other gaming handhelds, as some of the Steam Deck Alternatives that have hit the market. The portable gaming scene is, after all, very different from when the Nintendo Switch first made its mark on the gaming world.

Still, Nintendo probably has nothing to worry about. While people may compare the Switch 2’s hardware to other handhelds in its price range, they’re not buying Nintendo consoles for the graphics output, they’re buying them for the exclusive games. And since Nintendo Switch games work just fine on the Switch 2, people can upgrade without giving up their current backlog. Still, it will be interesting to see what effect, if any, the higher price and flood of handhelds on the market will have.
