Dave Griek’s 11th Annual LOSS Scramble at Big Apple Fun Center

NTV’s Dave Griek’s 11th Annual LOSS Scramble was held Saturday at the Big Apple Fun Center in Kearney. A mixed 4-on-4 volleyball tournament that raised money for Central Nebraska’s Loss team and its year-round efforts.

LOSS is an acronym for Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors and the volunteers help families who have lost someone to suicide. Dave and Renae Zimmer are the co-founders of Central Nebraska LOSS and both have come together to spread their messages and help anyone who is struggling with the agonizing grief of losing a loved one to suicide.

The volleyball tournament was a great event for all participants, but the reason for it had a deeper meaning.

Dave Griek of NTV said, “I lost my father to suicide when I was 10 years old. In 2014, I did a story for NTV and I realized we needed something else to raise awareness, prevent and post-meditate on suicide in this community, but we just didn’t have anything. So Renae and I got together and started the Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors team. So we go to families who have lost someone to suicide because there are a lot of questions, a lot of guilt… Imagine a 10-year-old boy who has to call his father on Sunday night, forgets, and on Monday finds out his father took his own life… That was my guilt. Renae’s brother died by suicide, she has her guilt, and we didn’t know where to turn, and that’s why we’re here now.”

Team NTV was there today to support Dave and the Central Nebraska LOSS team by participating in the volleyball tournament and the University of Nebraska Kearney volleyball team also helped referee. For resources, contact information and volunteer opportunities visit lossteamkearney.com
