A hyper-action-oriented installment in one of Capcom’s biggest franchises, Monster Hunter: Rise is another action-focused hack-and-slash game that pits hunters against large creatures in a variety of environments. Both games have an aesthetic art style reminiscent of Japanese mythology and revolve around dynamic battles against monstrous beings.


8 Fighting Style – Monster Hunter: Rise

Monster Hunter: Rise is all about intense hunter versus monster action. You must read the monster’s movements to exploit gaps, or create gaps for yourself and use the weapons of your choice. The action is very complex and relies on your own experience to learn weapon combinations and the best silkbind attacks for combat.


Rather than relying solely on your combat skills, Kunitsu-Gami focuses on the tower defense strategies you can employ. This means you can’t handle the oncoming “seethe” attacks alone. You’ll need to organize and build a strong defense to reinforce them, whereas Monster Hunter: Rise lets you take on the world’s many unique monsters single-handedly. And not just on your own, as there has always been an element of cooperative play in the series.

7 Defense Gameplay – Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess


Both games are about protecting the endpoints of your territories from an attacking legion of monsters. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is all about real-time strategy and tower defense. Villagers rescued during the day can be assigned special roles and placed at tactical points for the nighttime battles against monsters. This is the main gameplay loop and how you manage your efforts against the “Seethe”.

Monster Hunter: Rise, on the other hand, only applied this to the Rampage quests. A number of monsters will attack in a fenced-off area, and as you fight them you can use weapons and defenses to drive them away. After the first Rampage quest and a few that unlock the Ibushi and Apex Monsters encounter, you’ll barely need to do these quests again.

6 Graphic – Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess


Kunitsu-Gami uses the RE Engine for graphics, framerate, and faster animations. As a result, it runs beautifully on PC and has few framerate issues. Kunitsu-Gami’s art style and striking aesthetics work very well with the engine, making the game one of Capcom’s most beautiful games.

Monster Hunter: Rise uses the same engine, but most of the game’s models, environmental attributes, and basic limitations were originally designed for the Nintendo Switch when it was originally released as a console exclusive. Even after porting to other consoles like PS5 and PC, Monster Hunter: Rise’s initial appearance is still not as impressive as Monster Hunter: World.

5 Environmental Exploration – Monster Hunter: Rise


Monster Hunter: Rise is one of the most environmentally open-ended installments in the Monster Hunter series. Each of the seven hunting locations offers plenty of levels, depth, and travel opportunities thanks to Palemutes and Wirebugs. Some maps were locations from previous installments that were completely reworked to offer dozens of open-ended paths.

Exploring these vast environments is necessary to collect items, track down specific monsters, find native creatures that can aid in hunting, or collect items for progression. Kunitsu-Gami, on the other hand, may have incredibly beautiful designs and environments. Still, exploration is limited to traveling to a few points and then going into battle and developing defensive strategies.

4 Japanese folklore aesthetics – Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess


Monster Hunter: Rise has some aesthetic designs that were deliberately created with Japanese folklore in mind. But aside from the latest additions, there are still so many other monsters that don’t fit that aesthetic and the expansion. Sunbreak drifted away from Japanese to Western fables and horror monsters.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is very much Japanese in style in combat, tactics, setting, and music. The focus is on purifying Yokai corruption and cleansing the environment using the Divine Maiden Yoshiro, which is common in Shintoism, and the combat in the game is based on Kagura dances. These are ceremonial dances that are part of purification rituals and warding off monstrous spirits. Much of the game focuses heavily on these cultural aspects, using real word design and references.


3 Plot – Drawing

The plot of both games is fairly simple once you get past the initial introduction of the premise. The real star of these games is the gameplay loop. The story of Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess follows your character named Soh, who is tasked with protecting the maiden Yoshiro on her mission to purify Mount Kafuku. In order to combat the monstrous “Seethe” that invades the village at night, Soh would summon many different warriors to help defend while he battles the monstrous invaders.

In Monster Hunter: Rise, your hunter avatar grew up in Kamura Village, a small hunting community known for its unique steel mills and Elgado trade. Fifty years ago, the village was struck by a disaster called the Rampage, and with another looming in the distance, it’s up to you to prepare the village for defense while investigating the source of the Rampage. The storylines of both games have been woven together to keep the gameplay and NPC dialogue interesting, and both games do a great job of immersing you in the setting.

2 Enemy Types – Monster Hunter: Rise

Monster Hunter: Rise is known for having a large menagerie of different monster types to fight. With the release and recent update of the Subreak expansion, there are over 70 different large monsters for you to fight. They all have different strengths, weaknesses, hunting methods, and special means of defeating them. In comparison, the legions you face in Kunitsu-Gami are relatively easy to deal with, but the boss battles in Kunitsu-Gami are where the enemy design and challenge shine.


Almost every battle is a unique experience, and the tougher monsters are some of the most dynamic fights in the game, from Amatsu and the Thunder Serpents to Malzeno and Rathalos. Later in Monster Hunter: Rise and the Sunbreak expansion, you’ll also be introduced to various monsters, from Apexes and Afflicted monsters to Risen Elder Dragons, which add to the current challenge.

1 Conclusion – Monster Hunter: Rise

Monster Hunter: Rise remains an incredibly well-made action RPG, and the updates and expansions added by Sunbreak only add to its strengths and longevity. The combat, preparing for the next mission, and flowing in and out of the action are so addictive that you can spend hours collecting armor, upgrading weapons, getting decorations, and perfecting your best builds.


Monster Hunter: Rise remains one of the best action games of recent years and another great addition to Capcom’s long-running franchise, but Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess continues to explore the creative ideas of Capcom’s developers. A Japanese-style tower defense where Kagura dance warriors battle demons, it conveys the mood and atmosphere of Onimusha and other impressively stylized action games based on the myths of Japan.
