Josh Herrin won the second race of the MotoAmerica Steel Commander Superbike at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio on Sunday.

Sean Dylan Kelly of EasyHealthPlans.com/TopPro Racing BMW led for most of the race, closely followed by Herrin on his Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati Panigale V4 R and Cameron Beaubier on his Tytlers Cycle Racing BMW.

With two laps to go, Herrin passed Kelly in the first corner, hung his head and tried to sprint to the checkered flag. Kelly didn’t give up and stayed right behind Herrin until the end, but Herrin was strong enough to hold on to his lead and win the race by a split second.

With the win, his fifth of the season and his fourth in the last five races, Herrin extended his lead at the top of the championship points standings.

For second-placed Kelly, it was his fourth podium finish in his rookie Superbike season.

Beaubier had nothing to offer the leading duo and had to settle for a close third place, less than a second behind Kelly.

Herrin’s teammate Loris Baz recovered from a crash late in the first race to finish fourth in the second race.

Bobby Fong finished fifth with his Wrench Motorcycles Yamaha YZF-R1.

After finishing third in the first race in drying conditions, Beaubier’s teammate JD Beach finished sixth in the second race.

Richie Escalante, who was out since an injury following the first race of the 2024 season, overtook Cameron Petersen to take seventh place in his comeback on his Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki GSX-R1000R.

Petersen crossed the finish line 0.475 seconds behind Escalante in eighth place on his Attack Performance/Progressive Yamaha.

Ashton Yates finished ninth overall and won the Superbike Cup with his Jones Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP.

Petersen’s teammate, three-time and reigning champion Jake Gagne, completed the top 10.
