New business card holders for Famicom game cartridges from Sega Plaza

If you’ve ever wanted to bring the nostalgia of classic gaming back into your life, head to any arcade or “game center” in Japan this September to find the “Family Computer Card Case” collection, set to appear in the UFO Catcher crane games as part of Sega Plaza’s prize collection.

They look exactly like Family Computer cartridges (“Famicom”), but are actually card cases.

Sega Plaza is Japan’s leading producer of gaming and anime-related prize products. Although it is a division of Sega, it works with all sorts of franchises to offer customers a wide range of exclusive goods. Nintendo is one such big player that teams up with Sega for exclusive Plaza product releases. Although the two were once rivals in the video game console market, they now enjoy a friendly relationship as collaborators, which is good news for gamers.

There are five collectible versions of the series, covering the following titles: Super Mario Brothers, Ice Climber, Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong and Excitebike. Measuring 11 x 1.5 x 7 centimeters, the cases are almost identical to a regular Famicom cartridge and have the same shape and feel, transporting you right back to your bedroom in the 80s.

▼ The only difference is that the sleeves can be opened to store cards.

While they can be used to store all kinds of cards, you’ll definitely attract attention and maybe even endear yourself to a potential business partner if you use the case as a business card holder. In Japan, where business cards are handed out at meetings, cases are essential, and a case like this is likely to break the ice and get a conversation going, especially with a fellow Famicom fan.

As soon as news of the release broke, fans in Japan immediately expressed their desire to get their hands on the cases, leaving comments like:

“I need this in my life!”

“I want Ice Climber!!!!”

“They will help me relive my past struggles.”

“It’s great that Sega makes Famicom products!”

“Wow, I wonder if they will add more classics to the collection?”

“I hope they make a series out of it, next up are Mother (EarthBound Beginnings), Dragon Quest I and Final Fantasy III!”

We’d love to see more titles added to the series, but for now we’re looking to secure this complete set when it launches on September 20. Sega Plaza hasn’t announced where the cases will actually be available—and there’s a chance they’ll be available in some stores, too—but those details will be added soon. the product page closer to the release date.
