Lil Wayne’s performance at Afro Nation Detroit was cancelled due to weather

The rap superstar’s headlining performance at the two-day festival was interrupted after his plane was grounded in New York.

Lil Wayne canceled his headlining performance at Afro Nation Detroit on Sunday, 40 minutes after he was scheduled to take the stage to close the two-day festival.

“Afro Nation, I am truly sorry to inform you that I will not be able to perform tonight due to weather conditions that prevented my flight to Detroit,” the rapper wrote in a post on X on Sunday evening. “Hope to see you again soon.”

The post was sent at 10:10 p.m., 40 minutes after its announced start time of 9:30 p.m. at the Afrobeats fest held at Bedrock’s Douglass Site on Saturday and Sunday. The event, which was held in Detroit for the second time, featured around 40 performances, including sets from Rema, Asake, Partynextdoor, Kash Doll and others.

Heavy rains on the East Coast on Sunday reportedly led to the cancellation of dozens of flights from New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

“We just received the disappointing news that Lil Wayne will not be able to perform tonight due to weather conditions causing his flight to be cancelled in New York,” reads a post on the festival’s Instagram stories, published at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday. “We understand how disappointing this is. And we are just as disappointed as you are.”

The festival’s preliminary lineup was announced in March and Lil Wayne’s performance in May.

Wayne, 41, last performed in Detroit in December as part of WJLB-FM (97.9)’s Big Show alongside City Girls, Sexyy Red, Tee Grizzley, Skilla Baby and others.
