Man injured after becoming trapped in sewer pipe under Great Highway in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset neighborhood

SAN FRANCISCO — A fire department spokesman said firefighters rescued an injured man trapped in a pipe beneath the Great Highway in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset neighborhood in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Firefighters received a call at 3:41 a.m. Sunday from a man who said he heard screaming near a manhole cover on the upper Great Highway near Vicente Street, said Lt. Mariano Elias of the San Francisco Fire Department.

Apparently the man somehow got into the pipe and then crawled along it, which was 6 meters below street level, said Elias. At some point the pipe went down and the man fell on his head, said Elias.

On Wednesday morning, one person was rescued from the docks at Pier 39 in San Francisco.

“In order to perform a rescue in a confined space like a sewer pipe, you have to get an OSHA permit to enter the confined space,” Elias said. After following all the necessary protocols, firefighters found the man and rescued him by extricating him from the pipe shortly after 5 a.m., Elias said.

The man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with what Elias described as serious injuries.
