This state visit, Lam’s first official overseas trip since taking office, underlines the deepening relations between China and Vietnam against the backdrop of their shared history and evolving strategic partnership.

Here are five key points you should know about this important diplomatic engagement:

1. The new Vietnamese President To Lam’s first state visit to China began with a meeting with President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

2. China expressed its delight that Lam chose China for his inaugural visit. This decision underlines the strong ties between China and Vietnam and reflects the high value both countries attach to their relationship.
