The City of Huntsville is offering free rides on new routes from the new Huntsville Transit building

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (WAFF) – After years of planning and community feedback, the new and improved Huntsville Transit system is almost ready for its public unveiling.

This involves new routes that bus drivers and the people who depend on them must become familiar with.

“I think we underestimate how much of a burden driving can be on us,” said former city councilor Frances Akridge.

Akridge was one of many who received a free ride around the city on Sunday afternoon.

She says the new routes will improve accessibility not only for people who need to use the bus, but also for people like her who want to.

“It’s just that someone takes me to a place safely and I can just look out the window. Look at the clouds, for example. That’s good for us. I’m looking forward to using it,” she said.

Zane Breen, a supporter of public transport, shares this opinion.

He says he has been following the city’s progress on the project for years and even programmed a program to keep him up to date.

“I’ve been following this for a few years and it’s a great opportunity to finally see the new stop and the new route. It’s really exciting. I lived in a place where you didn’t have to rely on cars at all and I really missed that here,” Breen said.

This is not the only weekend that drivers and riders will be familiarizing themselves with their new tracks.

Next Sunday, the city will also offer free rides. The new Huntsville Transit hub on Pratt Avenue will officially open on September 3.
