Singer Jeon Somi recently revealed that she suffered severe hair damage due to the side effects of frequent dyeing. During an appearance on Hyeri’s YouTube channel, Hyeri asked her, “How do you take care of your scalp? Do you bleach your hair all the time?”

Jeon Somi said, “I’ve been bleaching my hair for three years now and do all my care routines at home. I don’t go to dermatologists or salons because I prefer to do everything myself. I hadn’t paid much attention to my scalp, but with all the dyeing and styling for my activities recently, my hair started breaking off due to a dyeing mistake. At one point, I even had a bald spot on the back of my head. It was so shocking – it was the most depressing time of my life.”

She continued, “When I saw other idols with short hair, I always thought, ‘Well, that’s just how it is, right?’ But after it happened to me, I realized how awful it actually felt. Even when I ran, my hair didn’t move because it was so short and straight – it was awful.”

Jeon Somi also mentioned that she had to undergo hair growth treatment due to the severe damage. “It felt like what people with hair loss go through to get hair back. I found a place and started the treatment. I also took much more care of my scalp. I’m not usually someone who takes supplements regularly, but after what happened, I knew I had to. My hair has recovered somewhat now, but the bald spot was much worse than you can imagine,” she explained.

Damage to hair and scalp caused by aggressive bleaching agents

Many celebrities, including Jeon Somi, often bleach their hair to change their image. Bleaching involves removing the natural pigment from the hair using harsh chemicals. If this is done without considering the condition of the hair and scalp, it can easily cause side effects.

To remove the hair’s natural pigment, a solution diluted with strong acids and hydrogen peroxide is used. These aggressive bleaching agents disrupt the hair’s moisture balance and corrode and oxidize keratin, melanin and moisture, causing damage to the hair structure.

To achieve bright blonde hair like Jeon Somi’s, multiple bleaching sessions may be necessary. If the hair is already damaged from previous bleaching, it may not withstand the process and could melt or break. Bleach that comes into contact with the scalp can also cause itching and oozing.

Hair growth treatment for a natural feel and flexible styling

If hair is severely broken, as in Jeon Somi’s case, hair augmentation may be considered. Hair augmentation is a method of attaching artificial hair to natural hair using tiny knots, similar to eyelash extensions, creating a fuller, natural look.

Compared to wigs or hair extensions, hair augmentation is less uncomfortable and there is less concern about secondary hair loss. It also allows more freedom in styling, including coloring, perming, and the use of heat tools, making it a beneficial option for celebrities who frequently change their hairstyle. The effects usually last about three months, depending on the individual.

Helpful in consuming hair-healthy foods and supplements

After bleaching, it is important to care for damaged hair by applying treatments or hair masks at least every 2-3 days. Using conditioner to prevent tangles is also important, as tangles can worsen damage.

Since UV rays are one of the main causes of hair damage, they should be avoided as much as possible. Before going out, it is advisable to use hairspray with UV protection or wear hats or parasols to protect the hair from the sun. Taking supplements like those Jeon Somi takes can also be helpful. Nutrients that are beneficial for dry and easily falling hair include biotin, vitamin E and omega-3. Regular consumption of protein-rich foods such as eggs, chicken breast, milk, tofu, almonds and beans can also contribute to healthier hair.
