It is finally a reality.
Maye has played at Gillette Stadium before, but Thursday will be the first time he’s ever played in that extremely boring mono-blue uniform. It’s the first time he’s played in front of an NFL crowd, against NFL opponents and with NFL teammates. It’s an opportunity to show Why He was selected number 3 in the 2024 NFL Draft.
How can he turn this moment into a success? What will the Patriots be looking for? How important is a season opener against the Carolina Panthers really? Let’s discuss it:

Play easy
Maye’s greatest talent at this stage of his development is his ability to create plays. He can move extremely well and compared to the other players at his position, he is the best at creating plays outside of the game plan.
Let’s take a look at the game against the Panthers.
Carolina will play extremely simple coverages because… you know… it’s the preseason. Maye should have plenty of opportunity to show off his arm, and when he’s on the field with Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, he should absolutely let it fly. He should get a few chances to run with it too, and as long as he makes smart choices, there’s no reason not to show off his legs.

Maye could throw seven interceptions and it wouldn’t be the end of the world. If he goes out there and suffers some kind of injury that keeps him from practicing? DISASTER. The Patriots can’t afford to have him out for any length of time, so if the offensive line collapses, and we know it will, the 21-year-old will have to make smart decisions – throw away, run and slide as early as possible, get the hell on his knees, etc.
Command the offensive
Jacoby Brissett will face the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1, and it has almost entirely to do with his command of the offense. Maye still seems to be a step (or six) behind the veteran, but a big step for him would be to show he can command a game.
Can he find himself in advantageous situations? Will he make the quick, well-timed throws? If he can do that, the Patriots should have a lot of confidence going forward.
