Fakespot | What is the technology? App of the day

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (WHAT KIND OF TECHNOLOGY?) — Product reviews are helpful when shopping online, but many of them are fake. That’s where something like Fakespot can help.

This app helps you identify which reviews are fake and which are real. Jamey Tucker explains.

Fakespot is a browser extension. If you’ve never installed one, visit the Chrome Store or this puzzle piece icon in Firefox. Search for Fakespot and install it.

As you shop, it scans the reviews and looks for reputable and non-reputable products. It also checks how many reviews a product gets. This security camera had over 21,000 reviews written in four days. That seems odd. The same goes for 1,000-word reviews. Who writes them?

This is information that none of us has the time to gather on our own.

Fakespot has found that only about half of the reviews of this camera are reliable. The reviews shown do not refer to the product itself. They only refer to the reliability of the reviews the product has received.

There are two Fakespot smartphone apps, but I find them difficult and time-consuming to use. The best way to use it is through the browser extensions on a computer.
