Will Drake Maye ruin the Patriots’ plan?

The wind has changed in Foxborough regarding the New England Patriots’ plans for the quarterback position.

When training camp reopened on July 23, Jerod Mayo said, “I think there’s no doubt about it – Jacoby is the starting quarterback at this point.”

Following Brissett’s shaky performance in last Thursday’s preseason loss to Philadelphia and the continued improvement of Drake Maye, the No. 3 overall pick, at the position, Mayo said this morning during his weekly radio appearance on WEEI, “We don’t have a starting quarterback right now. When we do, we’ll announce it. (Drake Maye) could very well be quarterback 1, as could Jacoby.”

It seems like there is a competition going on in the Patriots camp.

After playing just six snaps in his preseason debut, Maye took over the offense last week after Brissett threw a terrible interception in the end zone on a play where he had open receivers to attack.

Maye looked confident in leading the offense, getting the unit in and out of foul trouble while checking at the line on most plays. The young quarterback also showed off his athleticism by darting out of the pocket and making a short touchdown run, New England’s only one of the night.

While it’s only a few series in a preseason game, if this trend continues and Maye continues to put pressure on Brissett in these final two weeks before the season begins, should the Pats throw out their previous plans of giving Maye time to learn on the sidelines and start him from Day 1?
