The hype around Drake Maye is an overreaction

Paul Perillo was a guest on Monday’s “Felger & Mazz” show to discuss the current hype surrounding Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.

Overreaction to Drake Maye?

Parts of the conversation have been shortened for clarity.

Jim Murray: I came here last Monday, Paul – imagine I’m exaggerating – and said it was the darkest weekend for the Patriots since the wild-card loss to the Titans. That was Brady’s last game as a Patriot. And it just made everything uncertain.

Last week, we saw every other quarterback drafted in the first round do something to make their respective fan bases say, “Oh, wow!”

Especially with Bo Nix, who in my opinion failed in Oregon and has now played some good preseason games for Denver.

When you look at the whole weekend and compare it to Drake Maye, you think, “Oh, everyone has someone better than us. This is bad!”

But then Maye went out on Thursday night and played a good game. He made some shots and made some plays getting up in the pocket. The footwork looked better. I think everyone legitimately felt better about it.

Paul Perillo: Yes, I would say it will be a big surprise, but there was a lot of overreaction both weekends and I understand where Murray’s frustration came from.

Mazze: Overreacting to what we’re doing, Paul.

Perillo: I mean, we all do that. I’m not wagging my fingers here. We do the same thing at Patriots.com and everywhere else we talk about this topic.

I think my frustration in the first game came from the fact that he only played six snaps. But I didn’t conclude that he couldn’t play or wasn’t ready. That’s where all the overreactions came from.

What was more frustrating for me was the Patriots’ quarterback development plan. I know they have a plan, but how can it not include the rookie quarterback getting as many reps as possible? That was frustrating for me in the first week.

In the second week, I agree with Jim again. For the people who wanted the Patriots to draft a quarterback with the third pick, there was a glimmer of hope. There was hope last Thursday night against Philadelphia. You saw some of the things he did. I thought they did a good job of giving him things he’s more familiar with, from college and so on. I thought that was a great move to get him a little more familiar. And there was hope there.

From that Eagles game to today, all I hear is, “Drake Maye has to start! What do we do? Brissett can’t play.”

It’s all about Drake Maye and when they think he’s ready to play. It’s not about Jacoby Brissett. The Patriots have to figure out when Maye is ready. They have to figure out how quickly that can happen.
