McNeese University faculty and senior students help freshmen navigate campus

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana (KPLC) – Today was the first day of school for McNeese State University students and several faculty and seniors gave the new Cowboys a warm welcome.

For political science student and student representative Drew Brown, this will be the last time he will teach at McNeese University.

“I can’t lie, I’ve spent a lot of time at McNeese over the last three years of my life, but I wouldn’t take a second of it back,” Brown said. “I’m an optimist at heart and this is just the beginning of a better future.”

Brown remembers what it was like when he first stepped onto campus.

“As a senior, I feel a little older, but I remember being in her shoes. My first day of school seemed so meaningful. It was such a big event,” Brown said.

Brown, along with other members of the student government, the McNeese Police Department and university president Dr. Wade Rousse, have teamed up to use golf carts to help the Cowboy freshmen navigate the 1,500-acre campus.

Although it can be nerve-wracking, Brown says this is just the first step towards a better future for the new students.

“This fear is a privilege because what you are doing is improving your personality and you are pursuing higher education, which will benefit your life one day,” Brown said.

These golf cart rides are part of Howdy Rowdy Week at McNeese, where students can participate in club festivities and even a pool party to ensure they feel right at home.
