Recreational Activity Center (RAC) unveils new enhancements for students and faculty

Georgia Southern’s RAC is starting the new school year with a facility upgrade, including the purchase of new equipment for students and faculty.

According to Gene Sherry, executive director of Campus Recreation and Intramurals (CRI), planning began last fall semester. Sherry explained that the students’ RAC fees helped pay for the new equipment.

When you enter the RAC you will see a lower area with numerous machines and some new weight lifting equipment, but if you go upstairs you will find even more new features.

Here is a list of all new devices:

  • 12 new treadmills
  • 14 new elliptical trainers
  • Three new steppers (stair climbers)
  • Six new weight benches
  • Two Life Fitness Synergy 360 pieces
    • These can be used for many exercises such as squats, pull-ups, step-ups and more.
  • A synergy 180 pieces
    • This piece can be used for storage and has some training areas.

I spoke with Jonathan Rivera, RAC’s assistant fitness director, who discussed students’ reactions to the additional equipment.

“The response from students has been positive. We have received numerous compliments, from the choice of color of the equipment to the increased number of steppers to the offer of additional strength equipment,” said Rivera.

Rivera explained the improvements: “On behalf of the Fitness Lead Team, we are excited to take our fitness program to the next level while providing new opportunities to inspire students to exercise and build community at CRI.”

Check here for hours of operation and be sure to visit the RAC while you are here at Georgia Southern!
