Ballot initiative for the new community center in Dilworth

FARGO, ND (Valley News Live) – The old community center in Dilworth, which also served as the city’s fire department building, had quickly reached the end of its useful life in recent years.

Officials recently secured a large sum of state and federal funds to build a brand new fire station, and now they’re hoping Dilworth voters will step in and approve a sales tax increase to help fund the community center.

“We are on the verge of accomplishment – if our citizens support local sales tax,” said Mayor Chad Olson.

The proposal calls for increasing the sales tax by half a percent for up to 25 years, or until the city’s funding goal is met. They hope to raise about $6.1 million from the increase.

As an important selling point, those responsible cite a study according to which 35 percent of the revenue will come from non-residents.

“We are collecting a sales tax so that it can be used by other people, not just the residents of Dilworth,” said City Administrator Peyton Mastera.

The initiative will be put to a vote in November. If you would like to learn more about the community center proposal, you can visit the website here.
