2024 Buckeye Season Preview – Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The 2024 Ohio State men’s soccer season begins Thursday (8 p.m.) against Cleveland State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Admission and parking are free at all Ohio State regular season home games.

This will be the seventh season under the leadership of the head coach Brian Maisonneuve.

The Buckeyes return with an experienced team led by a skilled defender Deylen Vellioswho decided to return for a fifth season in 2024. Also returning are three seniors who missed the 2023 season due to injury.

defender Thomas Gilej And Nathan Demian together with midfielder David Wrona everything will be available again for Maisonneuve’s Buckeyes.

“I’m really excited about this group of returnees,” Maisonneuve said. “We went through a lot last year that really made us grow as a team. They came back this preseason really hungry and ready to go. This group has high expectations for themselves and can’t wait for the season to start. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Veterans Siggi Magnusson (D), Parker Grinstead (M), Anthony Samways (M), Michael Adedokun (M) and Tommaso Villa (M) all return for their senior campaigns.

Six newcomers, all freshmen, will make their debut this week.

Ohio natives Nick McHenry (D/Loveland), Lukas Laramore (GK/Milford) and Cole Evans Join (M/Springboro) Nick Skubis (M/Tampa, Florida), Johnny Rush (M/London) and David Ajagbe (F/Surrey, British Columbia) on the Ohio State squad.

“This is a very good year for freshmen,” said Maisonneuve. “They have integrated into the team brilliantly. They are all excellent football players with even better attitudes and personalities. This group of freshmen will make us a better team.”

Maisonneuve said the training camp had created a lot of excitement about the start of the 2024 season.

“It’s been a good preseason,” Maisonneuve said. “The work ethic and competitive spirit of this group is excellent. They push each other every day in training and that will make us sharper in the games. Last year we struggled to score goals but on our trip to England and at the start of preseason we scored a goal which is nice to see. I couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming season.”

After the opening game against the Vikings, the Buckeyes will travel to Akron to compete on August 25th (7 p.m.). The Buckeyes will then host the annual Wolstein Classic.

Ohio State will face SIUE on Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. (B1G+) after Dayton faces UNLV at 6 p.m. The Flyers will then face SIUE on Sept. 1 (3 p.m.) before the finale between UNLV and Ohio State at 7 p.m. (B1G+).


The Big Ten season begins for the Buckeyes on September 17 (6 p.m.) with an away game at Penn State. The game is the first of three games for Ohio State on the Big Ten Network. Home games against Washington (8 p.m./October 7) and Michigan State (6 p.m./October 29) will also be broadcast on BTN.


Washington is in its first season as a member of the Big Ten Conference after joining the league along with UCLA, Oregon and USC on August 1. Among the newcomers to the league, only the Huskies and Bruins sponsor the men’s soccer team.


Ohio State opens its Big Ten home game on September 22 (6:00 p.m./B1G+) against Rutgers.
